Small Farms Week

7- Can Chicken Tortilla SoupN.C. Cooperative Extension – Cherokee County Center held a food drive in recognition of Small Farms Week (March 27 – 31). This statewide event presented by Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T State University recognizes the contributions of small farmers in counties throughout North Carolina. Instead of a general collection of canned goods, extension staff collected items to provide families with ingredients to create a 7-Can Chicken Tortilla Soup.

Over 160 cans of goods were collected at the Extension office between January and March. The soup ingredients were placed into paper bags with the recipe, information on SNAP/EBT programs, and nutrition information. We were able provide these bags for 23 families as well as additional food items.

The donations were divided among two local food pantries. Pictured below is Moore House Ministries, a 501(c)3 organization that provides food, clothing and personal hygiene items to those in need of them. Founded in 1997 by Joy Lynn, the Food Pantry is located at 132 Cloe Moore Drive in Murphy, NC and directed by Don Hale. Hale reported Moore House Ministries serves approximately 50-60 recipients each week and the pantry is supported solely by donations. Volunteers, personal hygiene item donations, and ready-to-eat food are highly desired. The pantry is open 7 days per week and no ID is required to receive items. If you wish to contact Moore House Ministries, you can do so by calling (239)289-4138 or by email at DonaldHale2020@gmail.com.

Cherokee County Food Bank, Inc. was the second recipient of the food drive donations. Pictured below is Gene Craig, Secretary/Treasurer for the organization with Family & Consumer Sciences Extension agent, Marlana Baker, who led the food drive effort. Craig gave us a tour and overview of the facility, which is supported by MANNA Food Bank, Inc. and other local donations. Craig echoed many of the same desires as Moore House Ministries, requesting donations of personal hygiene items and volunteers (on Tuesdays). Craig also mentioned the food bank is in need of a Monday volunteer driver to deliver donated items from Murphy to their location at 122 Main Street, Andrews. Cherokee County Food Bank, Inc. is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. For more information call (828)321-5512.
