If your private applicators license expires on December 31, 2017 and you have not attained your two hours of V credits and two hours of X credits please do so by September 30, 2017. Make an effort to attend one of these meetings, as they are your last opportunity to get V credits in the area.  You should receive a letter if you do not have all your credits.

BFMA Annual Meeting – January 26th

The 2017 BFMA Annual Meeting will be held Thursday, January 26th at 6:00 PM. The meeting will be at the Vernon James Research and Extension Center (207 Research Station Rd, Plymouth). Supper will begin at 6:00 PM followed by a short business meeting and a presentation on the history of the Blacklands by Paul Lilley, Joe Landino, and Wade Hubers.

Regional Auxin Training & Blackland Cotton Production Meeting – February 6th

On February 6th, 2017, we will meet in Ponzer at the Community Building on Highway 264 for a regional auxin training and cotton production meeting. Auxin training will be held from 8 AM and the Blackland Cotton Production Meeting will follow at 10 AM.

As you know, XtendiMax and Engenia recently received federal registration for use on Xtend cotton and soybeans. We anticipate registration for Enlist Duo in the near future. And, you have seen reports about the off-target issues in the Mid-South this past summer. Because of those issues, EPA is strongly in favor of applicator training related to responsible use of auxin herbicides.

In addition to federal registration, a pesticide must also be registered within a state before it can be sold. North Carolina has decided to go with a state SLN label. This allows the state to include certain requirements in addition to what is on the federal label. So, North Carolina will require applicator training.

North Carolina’s SLN label will state the following:  “The producer, certified applicator, or person responsible for the application of this product on cotton or soybeans, in-crop, must attend Auxin Herbicides – Best Management Practices training that is approved by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture”. In other words, training is mandatory if one wants to use the new products. Attendees will receive credit in the X category on private applicator licenses.

The companies involved, BASF, Dow, and Monsanto, will be presenting training also. Company training will not fulfill the requirement on the SLN labels.

Alan York will be on hand at 8:00 AM to provide this training for cotton and soybean growers before the cotton production meeting later in the morning. Keith Edmisten, Guy Collins, and Dominic Reisig will be on hand to talk about cotton production as well. We will conclude with a sponsored lunch.

The Blackland Cotton Production Meeting will be held at the Ponzer Community Building on February 6th at 10:00AM and conclude with lunch. Speakers include: Drs. Keith Edmisten, Guy Collins, Alan York, and Dominic Reisig.

Eastern NC Small Grain Field Day – February 10th

This year’s small grain field day will be held at the Vernon James Center on February 10th. We have test plots on the station so as the date gets closer, we will determine logistics for the meeting as the weather allows. We hope that by having the field day earlier than in years past, it will allow you to apply what you learn to the current crop. Speakers include: Drs. Angela Post, Christina Cowger, Paul Murphy, Ron Heiniger, Dominic Reisig, and Wes Everman.

Water Management Meeting – February 24th

To produce crops profitably in our area, water management must be considered. Come to the Vernon James Extension and Research Center on February 24th to learn about emerging technologies and research. More information coming soon.

Grain Bin Safety Training – February 28th

Hyde County Extension is partnering with Lake Ridge Farms and the NC Agromedicine Institute to conduct this workshop on February 28th, 2017. The class will be led by LaMar Grafft, Associate Director of the NC Agromedicide Institue. This training is designed for farmers, farm workers, family members, elevator employees, emergency workers, and safety personnel. Topics will include: incidents involving grain storage and handling, grain bin hazards (electrical, falls, entanglements, engulfment), grain bin entry, and a lifeline demonstration. The event will begin at noon with lunch. We need to know how many to plan for, please call the Extension office or visit http://tinyurl.com/jpxx5xm to register.

Commercial Vegetable Meeting – January 25th

From Erin Eure (Area Specialized Agent – Commercial Fruits & Vegetables):  There will be a commercial vegetable meeting on January 25th from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at Nixon’s Catering (749 Virginia Road) in Edenton. Topics to be covered include: FSMA – training requirements & compliance dates, product label updates, greenhouse transplant production (seedless watermelons), driftwatch program & WPS changes. 2 hours of N, O, D, and X credits will be available. *Please call 252.357.1400 to register by January 20.*
